Vysvetliť samofinancovanie zo zisku a z odpisov.
Porovnať úver, leasing, dodávateľský úver, kontokorent a dotácie a vypočítať splátku úveru.
Vysvetliť finančnú páku a pravidlá financovania (zlaté bilančné pravidlo, pravidlo vyrovnania rizika).
Peniaze vznikli vo firme — firma si ich „zarobila“ sama.
Externý zdroj
Peniaze prišli zvonka — od niekoho iného.
Istina
Leasing
Vec používate hneď a platíte ju postupne mesačne.
Z dvoch odpovedí vznikne mapa so štyrmi políčkami.
KROK 1: DVE OTÁZKY
OTÁZKA 1 · KOMU PATRÍ?
Majiteľovi → vlastný zdroj. Nevraciate ho.
Niekomu inému (banke, dodávateľovi) → cudzí zdroj. Musíte ho vrátiť.
OTÁZKA 2 · ODKIAĽ PRIŠIEL?
Z firmy — firma ho vytvorila sama svojou prácou → interný zdroj.
Zvonka — niekto ho do firmy priniesol → externý zdroj.
KROK 3: TO ISTÉ VO VETERINÁRNEJ AMBULANCII
OBRÁZOK 1 · Mapa zdrojov krytia ambulancie
komu patrí ↓ odkiaľ prišiel →
INTERNÉvznikli vo firme
EXTERNÉprišli zvonka
VLASTNÉnevraciate
1Firma si ich zarobila sama
Zisk ponechaný vo firme — časť zisku, ktorú si majiteľ nevybral.
Odpisy — náklad, pri ktorom peniaze z firmy neodchádzajú.
Najbezpečnejšie, ale pomalé — treba najprv zarobiť.
2Majiteľ ich do firmy priniesol
Bankový úver a kontokorent
Leasing — napr. na auto alebo prístroj
Dodávateľský úver — lieky dnes, platba o 30 dní
Pôžička od spoločníka, dotácia*
Najviac možností a najväčšie sumy, ale platíte úrok a splátky.
* Dotácia je výnimka. Ak splníte podmienky, nevraciate ju. Ak ich nesplníte, musíte ju vrátiť. Preto ju dávame k cudzím zdrojom s hviezdičkou.
KROK 4: AKO MAPU POUŽIŤ

Okrem týchto dvoch otázok si pri každom zdroji položte ešte dve praktické:
Otázka
Odpovede
Prečo je dôležitá
Dokedy ho treba vrátiť?
do 1 roka = krátkodobý; neskôr = dlhodobý
Štyri otázky a každý zdroj máte zaradený.
Majiteľ dá do firmy svoje peniaze.
Odborne: koľko peňazí firma „vyrobí“ samaSčítajte zisk a odpisy.
Firma rastie pomaly.
Majiteľ riskuje svoje úspory.
Častá chybaVybrať si z firmy celý zisk. Firma potom nemá rezervu a pri prvom zlom mesiaci musí ísť do banky.
Kontrolná otázkaZisk po zdanení je 9 000 €. Majiteľ si vyberie 4 000 €. O koľko vzrastie vlastné imanie?
9 000 − 4 000 = 5 000 €.
Zdroj
Jednou vetou
Hodí sa na
Pozor na
Investičný úver
Banka požičia veľkú sumu na 3 – 10 rokov.
röntgen, ultrazvuk, auto, rekonštrukcia
úrok, banka chce plán a zábezpeku
Prevádzkový úver
Úver do 1 roka na bežný chod firmy.
väčší nákup liekov, sezóna
treba ho rýchlo splatiť
Kontokorent
Anuitná splátka = Úver × i ÷ (1 − (1 + i)−n) · i = ročný úrok ÷ 12, n = počet mesiacov
Skúste ten istý úver na 3 roky a na 10 rokov. Kratšia doba: vyššia splátka, menej úrokov. Dlhšia doba: nižšia splátka, viac úrokov.
Kontrolná otázkaV piatok vám chýba 2 000 € na mzdy. Klient zaplatí faktúru v pondelok. Aký zdroj použijete?
Kontokorent — potrebujete peniaze len na 3 dni.
ZASTÁVKA 4 · CENA A RIZIKO

7 500 − 1 500 = 6 000 €
Majiteľ zarobí na svojich peniazoch

24 % ↑
ZLÝ ROK — pobočka zarobí len 1 000 €
Zostane majiteľovi (po úroku)
1 000 €
1 000 − 1 500 = −500 €
Majiteľ zarobí na svojich peniazoch
2 %
−2 % ↓
Čo z toho plynie: v dobrom roku pobočka zarobila 15 % a úrok stál 6 % → úver pomohol. V zlom roku zarobila 2 % a úrok stál 6 % → úver uškodil.
Nie. Prístroj zarobí 4 %, úrok stojí 7 %. Majiteľovi to zníži výnos.
Potom porovnajte tri čísla: zadlženosť, likviditu a zlaté pravidlo. Víťaz je jasný na prvý pohľad.
Začíname súvahou ambulancie na konci 1. roka (kapitola 4, súčet 48 800 €). Pridáme röntgen za 25 000 €. Röntgen je vo všetkých variantoch rovnaký — mení sa len to, čím ho zaplatíme.
Variant
Ako zaplatíme
Čo sa zmení v súvahe
A
Úver na 6 rokov 25 000 €
+ röntgen, + dlhodobý úver (z toho 4 200 € splatíme tento rok)
B
15 000 € z účtu + úver 10 000 €
+ röntgen, − peniaze na účte, + menší úver
C
Koľko to stojí spolu? Sčítajte všetko: úroky, poplatky, akontáciu, poistenie.
Zaplatím splátku aj v zlom mesiaci? Ak nie, suma alebo doba je zlá.
Ako bude vyzerať súvaha? Nakreslite plánovanú súvahu a pozrite zadlženosť, likviditu a zlaté pravidlo.

Jar a leto (kliešte, očkovanie) prinášajú viac klientov než zima. Rezerva a kontokorent vyrovnajú slabšie mesiace.
Finančná páka pomáha, keď výnosnosť > úrok, a škodí, keď výnosnosť < úrok.
Zlaté bilančné pravidlo a pravidlo vyrovnania rizika chránia firmu pred problémami s platením.
Aké riziko ste ochotní niesť — a prečo?
VLASTNÉ ZDROJE1 / 14Do ktorého políčka mapy to patrí?›
Zaraďte ich do mapy (políčka 1 – 4).
AKO NA TO
Pri každom sa spýtajte: 1. Komu patrí? (majiteľovi = vlastný, inému = cudzí) 2. Odkiaľ prišiel? (z firmy = interný, zvonka = externý)
(a) Zisk patrí majiteľovi a firma si ho zarobila sama. (b) Peniaze patria majiteľom, ale prišli zvonka. (c) Peniaze patria banke a prišli zvonka. (d) Peniaze patria zamestnancom, no firma ich má „u seba“ z vlastnej prevádzky, kým ich nevyplatí.
VLASTNÉ ZDROJE2 / 14Koľko zisku zostane vo firme?›
Situácia: Ambulancia zarobila za rok 10 000 € (po zdanení). Majiteľ si vyberie 6 000 €. Koľko zostane vo firme?
AKO NA TO
Od zisku odpočítajte to, čo si majiteľ vybral.
ODPOVEĎ
10 000 − 6 000 = 4 000 €. O toľko vzrastie vlastné imanie.
6 000 €
4 000 €
Vybral majiteľZostalo vo firme
PREČO
Vybraté peniaze odišli k majiteľovi domov. Vo firme zostalo len 4 000 € — to je samofinancovanie.
VLASTNÉ ZDROJE4 / 14Spoločník vloží peniaze: čo sa stane so súvahou?›
Situácia: Nová spoločníčka vloží do ambulancie 10 000 € na bankový účet. Ktoré dve položky súvahy sa zmenia?
AKO NA TO
Pýtajte sa: čo firma teraz má navyše (aktíva)? A odkiaľ to prišlo (pasíva)?
ODPOVEĎ
Peniaze na účte +10 000 € (aktíva) a vlastné imanie +10 000 € (pasíva). Súčet súvahy stúpne o 10 000 €.
PREČO
Peniaze prišli na účet — firma ich má. A patria majiteľom — je to vlastný zdroj. Obe strany stúpli rovnako, súvaha zostala vyrovnaná.
CUDZIE ZDROJE5 / 14Koľko naozaj stojí úver?›
Situácia: Požičiate si 20 000 € na 5 rokov. Mesačná splátka je 387 €. Koľko zaplatíte spolu a koľko z toho je úrok?
AKO NA TO
5 rokov = 60 mesiacov.
Tu je to asi o 16 % viac, než ste si požičali.
CUDZIE ZDROJE6 / 14Leasing, alebo úver?›
Situácia: Prístroj stojí 12 000 €. Úver: spolu zaplatíte 13 100 €. Leasing: prvá platba 2 000 € + 36 splátok po 320 €. Čo je lacnejšie?
AKO NA TO
Pri leasingu sčítajte prvú platbu a všetky splátky. Porovnajte s úverom.
ODPOVEĎ
Leasing: 2 000 + 36 × 320 = 13 520 €. Úver je lacnejší o 420 €.
Úver 13 100 €
Leasing 13 520 €
CUDZIE ZDROJE7 / 14Zaplatiť faktúru skôr a dostať zľavu?›
Ak zaplatíte do 10 dní, dostanete zľavu 2 %.
Situácia: Nový softvér a počítače stoja 20 000 €.
CENA A RIZIKO10 / 14Pomôže úver majiteľovi zarobiť viac?›
Situácia: Prístroj stojí 20 000 € a zarobí 3 000 € ročne.
PRAVIDLÁ A SÚVAHA12 / 14Platí zlaté bilančné pravidlo?›
PRAVIDLÁ A SÚVAHA13 / 14Zaplatiť prístroj celý z účtu?›
PRAVIDLÁ A SÚVAHA14 / 14Nesie majiteľ dosť rizika?›
Situácia: Vlastné imanie ambulancie je 20 000 €, cudzie zdroje 30 000 €. Spĺňa pravidlo vyrovnania rizika? Ako sa k nemu môže priblížiť?
Veritelia (banka, dodávatelia) nesú viac rizika ako majiteľ. Pre mladú firmu je to bežné. Pomôže: nechávať zisk vo firme (vlastné imanie rastie), splácať úvery (cudzie zdroje klesajú) alebo prijať nového spoločníka.

Zobraziť odpoveď
PRAVDA — je to samofinancovanie; zvyšuje vlastné imanie.
2. Kontokorent je vhodný zdroj na kúpu röntgenu.
Zobraziť odpoveď
NEPRAVDA — röntgen slúži roky, kontokorent je krátkodobý a drahý. Porušuje sa zlaté bilančné pravidlo.
3. Dodávateľský úver je zadarmo, ak faktúru zaplatíte v splatnosti.
Zobraziť odpoveď
PRAVDA — dodávateľ vám „požičal“ na čas splatnosti bez úroku. (Pozor však na nevyužité skonto.)

Introduction
Imagine…
Your clinic has finished its first year. The balance sheet is healthy and you have €19,300 in the bank. Now you need an X-ray machine for €25,000.
You have four options: pay with your own money, take a 6-year loan, lease the machine, or pay for it “quickly” with an overdraft. The X-ray will be the same in every case. But the balance sheet will look completely different. Today you will find out why — and which option is best.
By the end of the lesson you will be able to:
Sort sources of funding into own and borrowed, internal and external, long-term and short-term.
Explain self-financing from profit and from depreciation.
Compare loans, leasing, supplier credit, overdrafts and grants, and calculate a loan repayment.
Explain financial leverage and the rules of financing (the golden rule, the risk balance rule).
Build a projected balance sheet for several financing options and choose the best one.
WHY IT MATTERS
Bad financing can sink even a profitable clinic. Not because it has no patients, but because it must repay a debt before it has earned the money. If you can choose the right source, you pay less interest, sleep better and the bank trusts you.
Six stops
A balance sheet has two sides. In Chapter 4 we looked mainly at the left side: what the business has. Today we look at the right side: where the business got the money. We go in small steps. Every stop starts with a short “In short” summary. Click a stop to jump to it.
The money belongs to the owner. You don’t pay it back to anyone.
Borrowed source
The money belongs to someone else. You must pay it back.
Internal source
The money came from inside — the business “earned” it itself.
External source
The money came from outside — from someone else.
Principal
The amount you borrowed.
Interest
What you pay extra as the “price” of borrowing.
Leasing
You use the item now and pay for it bit by bit every month.
Financial leverage
Debt that makes the owner’s profit bigger — but also the loss.
STOP 1 · MAP OF SOURCES
Where a business gets its money: four kinds of sources
In shortFor every source of money you only need to ask two things: Who does it belong to? and Where did it come from? The two answers make a map with four boxes.
STEP 1: TWO QUESTIONS
QUESTION 1 · WHO DOES IT BELONG TO?
The owner → an own source. You don’t pay it back.
Someone else (a bank, a supplier) → a borrowed source. You must pay it back.
QUESTION 2 · WHERE DID IT COME FROM?
From inside — the business created it by its own work → an internal source.
From outside — someone brought it into the business → an external source.
STEP 2: AN EXAMPLE FROM HOME
You are buying a new bike for €600. Where can the money come from?
You saved it from your salary → your money, made by your own work → own + internal.
Your parents gave you money as a gift → your money, but it came from outside → own + external.
You paid with money you had set aside for the electricity bill (which you pay next month) → you have the money, but it belongs to the power company → borrowed + internal.
You borrowed from a bank → someone else’s money from outside → borrowed + external.
STEP 3: THE SAME IN A VET CLINIC
FIGURE 1 · Map of a clinic’s sources of funding
who owns it ↓ where from →
INTERNALmade inside the business
EXTERNALcame from outside
OWNnot paid back
1The business earned it itself
Profit kept in the business — the part of profit the owner did not take out.
Depreciation — a cost where no money leaves the business.
Safest, but slow — you must earn it first.
2The owner brought it in
Owner’s investment — e.g. the share capital of a company.
A new partner — puts in money and becomes a co-owner.
Not paid back, but the owner takes a risk and shares the profit.
BORROWEDmust be paid back
3They arise in daily work
December wages and contributions — you pay them only in January.
Provisions — money set aside for a known future payment (e.g. unused holidays).
Small and short — the business holds them only for days or weeks.
4You borrowed from outside
Bank loan and overdraft
Leasing — e.g. for a car or equipment
Supplier credit — medicines today, payment in 30 days
Loan from a partner, grant*
The most choice and the largest sums, but you pay interest and repayments.
* A grant is an exception. If you meet the conditions, you don’t pay it back. If you don’t, you must. That is why we put it with borrowed sources, with a star.
STEP 4: HOW TO USE THE MAP
FIGURE 2 · Where does a source belong? Two questions in a row
A SOURCEe.g. a bank loan
→
WHO OWNS IT?the bank → borrowed
→
WHERE FROM?outside → external
→
BOX 4borrowed + external
Besides these two questions, ask two more practical ones about every source:
Question
Answers
Why it matters
When must it be paid back?
within 1 year = short-term; later = long-term
Expensive equipment needs a long-term source (stop 4).
What does it cost me?
with interest (loan, leasing) · without interest (supplier credit paid on time)
A cheaper source = more profit.
Check questionWhich box does each belong to: (a) profit the owner did not take out; (b) a car lease; (c) money from a new partner; (d) December wages paid in January?
RememberWho owns it? Where from? When to repay? What does it cost? Four questions and every source is sorted.
STOP 2 · OWN SOURCES
Money you don’t pay back to anyone
In shortThere are three own sources: the owner’s investment, profit kept in the business and depreciation. They are the safest because they are not repaid. But they are not free — the owner expects them to bring profit.
1 · Owner’s investment
The owner puts his or her own money into the business. In a Slovak s.r.o. this is share capital — at least €5,000 in total, at least €750 per partner.
EXAMPLE At the start you put in €12,000.
2 · Profit kept in the business
The business earns money. The owner takes part of it and leaves the rest. This rest is self-financing — the business grows with its own money.
EXAMPLE Profit €9,000, you take €4,000, €5,000 stays.
3 · Depreciation
Depreciation lowers profit, but no money leaves the account. Clients pay it in the price of the service, and the money stays in the business — for a future new machine.
EXAMPLE Depreciation of €7,500 a year stays in the business.
Self-financing from profit = Profit after tax − what the owner takes out
Technical: how much money the business “makes” itselfAdd profit and depreciation. The model clinic from Chapter 4: profit €6,000 + depreciation €7,500 = €13,500. The technical name is financial potential (or cash flow from operations). But the bank account grew by less (€7,300), because part of the money went into more stock, clients’ unpaid invoices and loan repayments.
ADVANTAGES
No repayments.
The bank sets no rules.
The more own money, the easier it is to get a loan.
DISADVANTAGES
There is little of it at the start.
The business grows slowly.
The owner risks his or her savings.
Common mistakeTaking all the profit out of the business. Then the business has no reserve, and at the first bad month it must go to the bank.
Check questionProfit after tax is €9,000. The owner takes out €4,000. By how much does equity grow?
9,000 − 4,000 = €5,000.
STOP 3 · BORROWED SOURCES
Money you must pay back
In shortThere are many borrowed sources. The main rule is one: the source should last as long as the thing you pay for. An X-ray for 8 years → a loan for years. Wages for 3 days → an overdraft for 3 days.
Source
In one sentence
Good for
Watch out for
Investment loan
The bank lends a large sum for 3 – 10 years.
X-ray, ultrasound, car, renovation
interest; the bank wants a plan and security
Working-capital loan
A loan of up to 1 year for daily running.
a bigger medicine order, a busy season
must be repaid quickly
Overdraft
You can go “below zero” on your account.
a few days until a client pays
high interest; the bank can cancel it at any time
Finance lease
You get the equipment now, pay for it, and at the end it is yours.
equipment, a car
a down payment; more expensive overall than a loan
Operating lease
You only rent the item; it never becomes yours.
a car, a copier, computers
you keep paying, even after years
Supplier credit
You get the goods today and pay in 14 – 60 days.
medicines, vaccines, supplies
free only if you pay on time
Loan from a partner
A partner lends the business his or her own money.
anything, quickly
always a written contract
Grant
Money from the state or the EU for a specific project.
modernisation, digitalisation
you pay part yourself, the money often comes later, you must keep the project going (e.g. 5 years)
Technical: leasing in the balance sheetFinance lease: in Slovakia the equipment goes into the clinic’s assets and the debt to the leasing company into liabilities — in the balance sheet it looks like a loan. Operating lease: the equipment is not in the clinic’s balance sheet; the monthly payment is just a cost.
HOW A LOAN IS REPAID
Every payment has two parts: principal (paying back what you borrowed) and interest (paying for borrowing). The most common is the annuity payment — the same amount every month. At the start it has more interest in it, at the end more principal.
Annuity payment = Loan × i ÷ (1 − (1 + i)−n) · i = yearly rate ÷ 12, n = number of months
You don’t need to learn the formula — use the calculator below.
FIGURE 3 · Loan calculator: how much will you really pay?
Try the same loan over 3 years and over 10 years. Shorter: a higher payment, less interest. Longer: a lower payment, more interest.
Check questionOn Friday you are €2,000 short for wages. A client pays an invoice on Monday. Which source do you use?
An overdraft — you need the money for only 3 days.
STOP 4 · COST AND RISK
When borrowing pays off
In shortBorrowing pays off when the investment earns more than the interest costs. If it earns less, the debt eats your profit. Two rules protect you: the golden rule and the risk balance rule.
FINANCIAL LEVERAGE IN ONE EXAMPLE
A new branch costs €50,000. We compare two ways: all own money, or half own money and half a loan at 6% interest (€1,500 a year). We look at what percentage the owner earns on his or her own money (ROE). We leave out taxes to keep it simple.
Only own money
Half loan
Owner’s money
€50,000
€25,000
GOOD YEAR — the branch earns €7,500
Left for the owner (after interest)
€7,500
7 500 − 1 500 = €6,000
Owner’s return on own money
15%
24% ↑
BAD YEAR — the branch earns only €1,000
Left for the owner (after interest)
€1,000
1 000 − 1 500 = −€500
Owner’s return on own money
2%
−2% ↓
What this shows: in the good year the branch earned 15% and interest cost 6% → the loan helped. In the bad year it earned 2% and interest cost 6% → the loan hurt. Interest is always paid; profit is never certain.
AnalogyA lever lifts a heavy stone — but if it slips, it hits you. Debt makes profit bigger in a good year and the loss bigger in a bad year.
Technical: the tax shieldInterest is a cost that lowers profit, and so also the tax. So a loan really costs a little less than the interest rate says.
TWO RULES THAT PROTECT YOU
THE GOLDEN RULE
Simply: pay for what lasts years with money for years.
If it fails: you must repay the debt before the equipment has earned the money.
THE RISK BALANCE RULE
Simply: the owner should have at least as much in the business as others have lent.
Formula: equity ≥ liabilities.
A new business often doesn’t meet it. What matters is getting closer every year.
Common mistakeLooking only at the monthly payment. A low payment over 10 years means much more interest. And the equipment may get old before you have paid it off.
Check questionA new ultrasound will earn about 4% of its price a year. The loan costs 7%. Will the loan help the owner earn more?
No. The machine earns 4%, interest costs 7%. It lowers the owner’s return.
STOP 5 · PROJECTED BALANCE SHEET
An X-ray for €25,000: three ways to pay
In shortBefore you decide, draw a projected balance sheet for each option. Then compare three numbers: the debt ratio, liquidity and the golden rule. The winner is clear at first sight.
We start with the clinic’s balance sheet at the end of year 1 (Chapter 4, total €48,800). We add an X-ray for €25,000. The X-ray is the same in every option — only how we pay for it changes.

about €1,400
about €560
about €2,500
Winner: option A. There is more debt, but the business still has enough money for its bills and the golden rule holds. Option B looks safe (less debt), but it uses almost all the cash — liquidity falls below 1. Option C is the worst: the highest interest and a big debt due at once.
Watch out: less debt is not always betterIn option B only €4,300 stays in the bank. If two regular clients pay late, you won’t have money for wages. Cash is like oxygen for a business.
STOP 6 · HOW TO CHOOSE
Five questions before any financing
In shortBefore you sign a loan, a lease or a grant application, go through five questions. If you answer “I don’t know” to any of them, don’t sign yet.
What is it for? Something for years → a source for years. A short gap → a short source.
What is the total cost? Add up everything: interest, fees, down payment, insurance.
Can I pay even in a bad month? If not, the amount or the length is wrong.
What will the balance sheet look like? Draw a projected balance sheet and check the debt ratio, liquidity and the golden rule.
What does the lender want in return? Security, a personal guarantee, other conditions.
Technical: how the bank judges you (the “5 Cs”)
Character — are you reliable? Have you paid on time so far?
Capacity — will the business earn enough for the payments?
Capital — how much of your own money did you put in?
Collateral — what does the bank get if you don’t pay?
Conditions — how are the market and the industry doing?
QUICK GUIDE: WHAT TO PAY WITH WHAT
What you pay for
✓ Good choice
✗ Bad choice
X-ray, ultrasound
a multi-year loan, finance lease, own money, grant
overdraft
A car for home visits
leasing
supplier credit
Medicines and vaccines
supplier credit, own money
a 6-year loan
Wages until a client pays
overdraft, cash reserve
leasing
Digitalising the clinic
grant + own money
overdraft
Beware of grantsGrant money often comes only after the project ends. So you must first pay for the whole project yourself or with a short-term loan. And if you don’t meet the conditions, you pay the grant back.
INDUSTRY SPECIFICS
Financing a vet practice
EQUIPMENT GETS OLD
Diagnostics develop fast. The loan should not last longer than you will really use the machine.
SEASONS
Spring and summer (ticks, vaccinations) bring more clients than winter. A reserve and an overdraft smooth out the weaker months.
THE VET AS SECURITY
A small practice depends on one person. So the bank often wants a personal guarantee or life insurance.
MEDICINE DISTRIBUTORS
Supplier credit is a great help — but late payments make the supplier’s terms worse.
Key takeaways
Sources are own or borrowed, internal or external, long-term or short-term.
Self-financing = profit kept in the business + depreciation. Own sources are safe, but not free.
Loans, leasing, overdrafts, supplier credit and grants differ in purpose, length and cost. The source should last as long as the asset.
Leverage helps when the return > interest, and hurts when the return < interest.
The golden rule and the risk balance rule protect the business from payment problems.
Before deciding, build a projected balance sheet for each option and compare the ratios.
Back at the bank
You arrive with three projected balance sheets. The adviser looks at option A: current ratio 1.85, the golden rule holds.
“I wouldn’t have approved option C anyway,” she smiles. “An X-ray paid with an overdraft is the most common mistake I see.” You sign the 6-year loan that same day.
QUESTION FOR DISCUSSION
If you needed €50,000 for a new practice, how much would you put in from your own savings and how much would you borrow? How much risk are you willing to take — and why?

OWN SOURCES1 / 14Which box of the map does it go in?›
Situation: The clinic has four sources: (a) profit the owner did not take out; (b) money put in by a new partner; (c) a bank loan; (d) December wages it will pay only in January. Put them on the map (boxes 1 – 4).
HOW TO SOLVE IT
For each one ask: 1. Who owns it? (the owner = own, someone else = borrowed) 2. Where did it come from? (inside = internal, outside = external)
ANSWER
(a) box 1 · (b) box 2 · (c) box 4 · (d) box 3
WHY
(a) Profit belongs to the owner and the business earned it itself. (b) The money belongs to the owners, but it came from outside. (c) The money belongs to the bank and came from outside. (d) The money belongs to the staff, but the business holds it from its own work until payday.
OWN SOURCES2 / 14How much profit stays in the business?›
Situation: The clinic earned €10,000 this year (after tax). The owner takes out €6,000. How much stays in the business?
HOW TO SOLVE IT
Take what the owner took out away from the profit.
ANSWER
10,000 − 6,000 = €4,000. Equity grows by this amount.
€6,000
€4,000
Taken by the ownerKept in the business
WHY
The money taken out went home with the owner. Only €4,000 stayed in the business — this is self-financing. The business can use it without a loan, e.g. for new equipment.
OWN SOURCES3 / 14Depreciation: money that stays in the business›
Situation: An ultrasound costing €20,000 is depreciated over 4 years. What is the depreciation per year? How much money can the business “put aside” in 4 years for a new ultrasound?
HOW TO SOLVE IT
Depreciation = price ÷ years. Then multiply by the number of years.
ANSWER
20,000 ÷ 4 = €5,000 a year. In 4 years: 4 × 5,000 = €20,000.
WHY
Depreciation is a cost, but no money leaves the account. Clients pay it in the price of exams. If the business doesn’t spend the money on other things, after 4 years it has enough for a new machine.
OWN SOURCES4 / 14A partner puts in money: what happens to the balance sheet?›
Situation: A new partner puts €10,000 into the clinic’s bank account. Which two balance sheet items change?
HOW TO SOLVE IT
Ask: what does the business now have extra (assets)? And where did it come from (sources)?
ANSWER
Cash +€10,000 (assets) and equity +€10,000 (sources). The total grows by €10,000.
WHY
The money arrived in the account — the business has it. And it belongs to the owners — it is an own source. Both sides went up by the same amount, so the balance sheet still balances.
BORROWED SOURCES5 / 14What does a loan really cost?›
Situation: You borrow €20,000 for 5 years. The monthly payment is €387. How much do you pay in total, and how much of it is interest?
HOW TO SOLVE IT
5 years = 60 months. Payment × 60 = total. Total − borrowed = interest.
Interest is the price of borrowed money. Looking at the €387 payment is not enough — what matters is how much extra you pay. Here it is about 16% more than you borrowed.
BORROWED SOURCES6 / 14Leasing or a loan?›
Situation: The equipment costs €12,000. Loan: you pay €13,100 in total. Lease: first payment €2,000 + 36 payments of €320. Which is cheaper?
HOW TO SOLVE IT
For the lease, add the first payment and all monthly payments. Compare with the loan.
ANSWER
Lease: 2,000 + 36 × 320 = €13,520. The loan is cheaper by €420.
Loan €13,100
Lease €13,520
WHY
The leasing company charges more because it takes the risk and handles everything for you. People still choose leasing because it is fast and needs no extra security — the equipment itself is the guarantee. It is a choice of “convenience versus price”.
BORROWED SOURCES7 / 14Pay an invoice early and get a discount?›
Situation: A medicine invoice is €1,000, due in 30 days. If you pay within 10 days, you get a 2% discount. You have the money in the bank. What do you do?
HOW TO SOLVE IT
Work out how much you save and compare it with what the money would earn in the bank.
ANSWER
You save €20. Pay early.
WHY
€20 for paying just 20 days earlier is a lot. In a normal account, €1,000 would earn almost nothing in 20 days. As a yearly rate it is about 36% — much more than any savings account pays.
BORROWED SOURCES8 / 14Overdraft or loan?›
Situation: You have two needs: (1) on Friday you are €2,000 short for wages; a client pays on Monday; (2) you want to buy an X-ray for €25,000. Which source do you use for which need?
HOW TO SOLVE IT
Ask: for how long do I need the money?
ANSWER
(1) Wages → overdraft. (2) X-ray → a loan for several years (or leasing).
WHY
You need to cover wages for only 3 days — an overdraft is made for short gaps. The X-ray will earn money for years, so pay for it over years. If you put the X-ray on the overdraft, you would have to repay a big sum before it has earned it.
BORROWED SOURCES9 / 14The grant comes later›
Situation: New software and computers cost €20,000. A grant pays half, but sends the money only after the project is finished. How much must the clinic pay at the start?
HOW TO SOLVE IT
Watch the words “only after”. Who pays the supplier right away?
ANSWER
At the start the full €20,000. After the project, €10,000 comes back.
WHY
The supplier wants the money now; the grant comes later. So the clinic needs the whole amount in advance — from its own money or a short-term loan, which it then repays with the grant.
COST AND RISK10 / 14Does a loan help the owner earn more?›
Situation: Equipment costs €20,000 and earns €3,000 a year. Option 1: all own money. Option 2: €10,000 own + a €10,000 loan with €500 interest a year. What percentage does the owner earn on his or her own money?
HOW TO SOLVE IT
(What the equipment earns − interest) ÷ the owner’s own money.
The equipment earns 15% a year, but the loan costs only 5%. The difference goes to the owner. And the owner put in only half the money. This is financial leverage — it works when the equipment earns more than the interest costs.
COST AND RISK11 / 14And what if things go badly?›
Situation: The same equipment as in example 10 earns only €600 in a bad year. What percentage does the owner earn in each option?
HOW TO SOLVE IT
The same steps. The €500 interest must be paid even in a bad year.
Now the equipment earns only 3%, but the loan costs 5%. Interest “eats” almost all the profit. Leverage also works the other way: when things go badly, debt makes profit smaller. Interest is always paid; profit is never certain.
RULES AND BALANCE SHEET12 / 14Does the golden rule hold?›
Situation: A clinic has equipment worth €30,000. Equity is €10,000, a 5-year loan €5,000 and an overdraft €15,000. Does the golden rule hold?
HOW TO SOLVE IT
Add only the long-term sources: equity + long-term loans. The overdraft is short-term, so it doesn’t count. Compare with the value of the equipment.
ANSWER
10,000 + 5,000 = €15,000 < €30,000. It does not hold — €15,000 of long-term money is missing.
Equipment €30,000
€15,000
missing
WHY
Half the equipment is paid with an overdraft that the bank can cancel at any time. The equipment earns money for years, but the debt must be repaid now. Solution: replace the overdraft with a loan for several years.
RULES AND BALANCE SHEET13 / 14Pay for the equipment all from the account?›
Situation: Current assets (stock, receivables, cash) are €20,000. Short-term liabilities are €10,000. The owner wants to pay €12,000 for equipment straight from the account. What is the current ratio before and after?
HOW TO SOLVE IT
Current ratio = current assets ÷ short-term liabilities. After buying, current assets fall by €12,000.
The money turned into equipment. The equipment is useful, but you can’t pay bills with it. The business now lacks money for its short-term debts (current ratio below 1). It is better to pay part from the account and the rest with a loan or lease.
RULES AND BALANCE SHEET14 / 14Does the owner carry enough risk?›
Situation: The clinic’s equity is €20,000 and its liabilities are €30,000. Does it meet the risk balance rule? How can it get closer?
HOW TO SOLVE IT
Rule: equity ≥ liabilities.
ANSWER
20,000 < 30,000 → it does not. €10,000 of own money is missing.
WHY
The lenders (bank, suppliers) carry more risk than the owner. This is normal for a young business. What helps: keeping profit in the business (equity grows), repaying loans (liabilities fall) or taking in a new partner.

5Multiple choice — calculations and situations
First answer all 15 questions on your own. Each is worth 10 points (150 points in total). For True/False questions write T or F; for multiple-choice questions choose one letter (A–D). About 15 minutes. Click “Show answer” to check.
PART A · TRUE OR FALSE (QUESTIONS 1 – 5)
1. Profit that the owner does not take out and keeps in the business is an own source of funding.
Show answer
TRUE — this is self-financing; it increases equity.
2. An overdraft is a good way to pay for an X-ray machine.
Show answer
FALSE — an X-ray lasts for years; an overdraft is short-term and expensive. It breaks the golden rule.
3. Supplier credit is free if you pay the invoice on time.
Show answer
TRUE — the supplier “lent” you money until the due date without interest. (But watch out for a missed early-payment discount.)
4. Financial leverage always increases the owner’s return.
Show answer
FALSE — only when the investment’s return is higher than the interest rate. Otherwise it lowers the return.
5. A grant is often paid only after the project is done, so you must first pay for the project from other sources.
Show answer
TRUE — that is why a bridging loan or own money is used.
PART B · MULTIPLE CHOICE — CONCEPTS (QUESTIONS 6 – 10)
6. Which source is internal?
A. A bank loan
B. Depreciation
C. Leasing
D. Money from a new partner
Show answer
Correct: B. Depreciation comes from inside the business — a cost with no money going out.
7. An annuity payment means that:
A. You pay the same amount every month
B. You pay only interest
C. Payments grow every month
D. You pay the whole loan at the end
Show answer
Correct: A. Only the split between interest and principal inside the payment changes.
8. With an operating lease:
A. The equipment is in the clinic’s assets
B. The equipment is not in the clinic’s balance sheet; payments are a cost
C. Nothing is paid
D. It is a grant
Show answer
Correct: B. The equipment belongs to the leasing company; the clinic only uses it.
9. The risk balance rule says that:
A. Equity ≥ liabilities
B. Stock = cash
C. Interest ≤ 5%
D. A business must not have debt
Show answer
Correct: A. The owner carries at least as much risk as the lenders.
10. Which of the “5 Cs” checks whether the business can earn enough to repay?
A. Character
B. Capacity
C. Collateral
D. Conditions
Show answer
Correct: B. Capacity = the ability to repay from cash flow.
PART C · MULTIPLE CHOICE — CALCULATIONS AND SITUATIONS (QUESTIONS 11 – 15)
11. Profit after tax is €15,000; the owner takes out €9,000. How much is self-financing from profit?
A. €24,000
B. €15,000
C. €9,000
D. €6,000
Show answer
Correct: D. 15,000 − 9,000 = €6,000.
12. An investment of €20,000: €10,000 own, €10,000 loan at 6%. Operating profit €3,000. What is the return on equity (ROE, no taxes)?
15. The clinic pays €20,000 for equipment from the bank account. Current assets fall from €30,000 to €10,000; short-term liabilities are €12,000. What happens?
A. The current ratio falls from 2.5 to 0.83 — payment problems may follow
B. Liquidity does not change
C. The balance sheet total falls by €20,000
D. Equity goes up
Show answer
Correct: A. 30,000 ÷ 12,000 = 2.5 → 10,000 ÷ 12,000 = 0.83. The total does not change (A+ A−).

TEST 2 · ANSWER KEY
Show the full answer key for Test 2
Part A
1. TRUE — they belong to the owner.
2. FALSE — leasing is usually more expensive overall; its advantages are speed and simple security.
3. TRUE — interest is paid for longer.
4. TRUE — it lowers taxable profit (the tax shield).
5. FALSE — cash (a current asset) turns into a long-term asset, so liquidity falls. Part B
6. B — an overdraft is for short dips.
7. A — principal = the borrowed amount.
8. B — return > interest.
9. A — profit kept in the business + depreciation.
10. B — the project result must be kept for a set time. Part C
11. B — 2,000 + 48 × 500 = €26,000.
12. A — (8,000 − 3,000) + 5,000 = €10,000.
13. B — 12,000 + 20,000 = €32,000 < €40,000; €8,000 is missing (the overdraft is short-term).
14. A — 30,000 ≥ 25,000.
15. C — the grant comes later; at the start the whole €30,000 is needed.
